I did self-study O Chem last year for USNCO, but it was more passive learning because I just read some textbooks, and during the local and national ones I kind of just went with my gut feeling because I wasn't practicing the problems a lot. This program gave me a more structured approach with more practice problems to apply skills.

A LOT. E1, SN1, SN2, E2 reactions. I finally understood chirality, and now I can identify chiral molecules. Chair conformations of cyclohexane really helped, and now I'm able to draw those as well as identify the best form.

I am now capable of answering the majority of the organic chemistry questions on USNCO exams, and I understand the concept of resonance and resonance structures to a much better extent. I am able to detect common patterns between different topics, to make educated guesses for concepts I may not be too familiar with.

I didn't know anything about organic chemistry before this class, so except the AP Chemistry review sections everything was new to me. The workload was challenging but it was also rewarding, and the quiz-lecture-problem set rhythm helped me retain the concepts well.

I think I learned a lot in this class, not just about organic chemistry but also USNCO problem solving skills. I liked the constant problem sets, and the USNCO-styled questions pulled directly from different chemistry olympiads were a good challenge for me.

The pacing was good, with various questions being covered and answered. The depth of the discussions was very comprehensive. The problem set rhythm was reasonable and intensive without being overwhelming.

The week was fast and intensive and very useful in learning organic chemistry. The problem sets and practice reinforced the lectures, and doing hundreds of questions drilled in the concepts. The workload was heavy, but it was heavy in a good way.

Because I decided to go with the recording option for the lectures, the pace felt a little more relaxed — I was able to self-correct for the time I needed on a specific topic.

突然想通的那一刻

My most memorable moment was during our lecture on hydrogenation, looking at that diagram drawn on the lecture notes — how the H2 molecules essentially act as radicals on the surface of the metal, attacking the pi bond two at a time. That visual, of the hydrogens sitting as little bumps on the metal surface, made it a lot easier to understand the mechanism.

Doing challenge problem #3 on the reactivities and mechanisms homework — the long arrow-pushing one. The one we did in class I wasn't too confident about and we did together, but doing this problem on my own was very satisfying, just to see the overall reaction.

    取代与消除反应讲得更多,也开始得更早

    11 位学生中有 10 位把 E1/E2 列为仍然没把握的内容,7 位列了 SN1/SN2。这两块正好排在第 4–5 天,也是好几位学生反映节奏最紧的时候;还有一位直接提出,前期基础可以少讲一些,反应机理要多讲。

    不饱和度公式提前到头两天讲

    做异构体计数题的学生说,这个公式讲到一半才出现,那时他们已经在这类题上卡了很久。

    书面详解写短一些,挑战题标注难度

    学生认为详解有用,但太长了,回头不好再看一遍;他们也希望知道挑战题该从哪一道开始做。

    每节课后发一份书面小结,另附进阶专题阅读清单

    课上口头讲过的内容——消除反应中的共平面要求、自由基反应——课后只靠笔记很难还原。

    重做课前小测和讲义填空

    课前小测在 11 位学生中只被选了 1 次,和结课考试并列最低;还有几位学生说,讲课节奏快的时候讲义上的空来不及填。

I could treat each packet as a problem set to do after each chapter, and do them to the best of my ability. I hope that with repeated practice and reading, I will be able to advance to the USNCO national level.

I'm using the packets to review before USNCO Locals and Nationals — going back to the questions I struggled with or got wrong, and completing the ones I didn't get to. My goal is to make Honors next year.
